How to Get Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night

One of the most common challenges among parents is getting their baby to sleep through the night. Newborn babies do not have big enough stomachs to keep them full through the night so they tend to wake every few hours to feed. As your baby grows, those nighttime feedings become far less often. This is when parents tend to expect their baby to sleep through the night but that does not always happen. This leaves parents frustrated, exhausted, and seeking solutions. Here are some solutions to get your baby to sleep through the night.

#1. Have a Bedtime Routine

It is never too early to start a bedtime routine. It should be simple and sustainable so that it is easy for you to do every night. The smallest change in your baby’s bedtime routine can lead to them feeling off and wake more frequently during the night. Use calming and soothing activities in your baby’s bedtime routine such as shushing and swaddling. A Baby Minky Blanket is great for swaddling.

#2. Teach Your Baby to Self-soothe

It is okay to go check in on your baby when they wake in the middle of the night and cry. However, it is best to limit your time in there with them. Your baby has to understand it is still time to sleep and not the time for playing or eating. To quickly calm your baby, place your hand on their chest for a little bit, wrap them in their minky blanket and then leave. This simple routine will teach your baby to self-soothe leading them to fall back asleep by themselves.

#3. Reduce Night Feedings

You should slowly start to reduce nighttime feedings as soon as your doctor tells you to. Feeding becomes associated with sleep because you fed them every time they woke up. Even when frequent night feedings are not necessary anymore, it does not mean your baby will not want them. You want to slowly wean them of night feedings.

#4. Follow a Schedule

You should make sure your baby is getting the right amount of daytime sleep so they are prepared for the right amount of nighttime sleep. Babies cannot differentiate between day and night. They will sleep when they want and as they get older, they start sleeping for longer hours. They will not stay asleep during the night if they are sleeping for too long during the day. Set a sleep schedule for your baby that they can follow.

#5. Have a Calming Ambiance

Ambiance is everything for a baby, especially at night. Make sure you set the right ambiance by keeping the room temperature comfortable, keep it dark, and add some white noise. The smallest sound can disturb your baby’s sleep and white noise will provide a consistent, soothing sound for them to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Conclusion

It is not always easy to get your baby to sleep at night and stay asleep. This is especially true for them as a newborn. It is best to remember that this happens to every parent and should not frustrate you. Instead, make sure you are prepared with these tips on how to help your baby sleep through the night.

  • My best friend had the hardest time getting her son on a sleep schedule. I feel like she tried everything and just could not get him to stop waking up in the night. These are great tips to share with some of my other friends having babies. Especially swaddling with the minky blanket. That may just be my new go to gift.

  • Thanks so much for these great tips for getting your baby to sleep through the night. I am a new grandmother and my daughter hasn’t had a good nights sleep for weeks. I’ve already bought her a Minky Blanket and am hoping it helps her with the night time routine – I LOVE the tip about the white noise, I will tell her to give that a try thanks so much!

  • My sister really struggled when my nephew was a baby to get him to sleep through the night without waking up screaming. She tried all kinds of things but nothing worked so she would sleep sitting on a chair with her baby in her arms. I wish that I knew about the Minky Blanket then and got her one. But I’m definitely getting her one for the next baby so she doesn’t have to go through that again. Such a great idea!
